Mount Everest

Known as ‘Sagarmāthā’ in Nepal and ‘Chomolungma’ in Tibet, the highest mountain on Earth stands 8,848 metres above sea level and continues to grow at a rate of 4mm a year due to the effect of plate tectonics on the Himalayan range. It has been climbed over 4,000 times since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s first successful attempt in 1953.
